Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that basically removes fat deposits from the body and then re-contours the area to create a smaller, smoother and more physically appealing appearance. Liposuction is usually undertaken by people who are having difficulties removing fat deposits from their body, even after trying traditional methods of exercise and diet. Liposuction helps remove fat deposits from those hard to move areas, such as the chin, stomach, sides, chest, back and thighs.

Wondering what’s involved in liposuction surgery? Read on:

SURGERY:

Liposuction surgery involves a small incision in the region of the liposuction and into that a narrow tube, or cannula, is inserted. The cannula is similar to a vacuum in that it sucks out the layer of fat that lies beneath the skin. The cannula breaks up the fat cells by pushing and pulling through the fat layers and then suctions the fat out of the body. The area is then sculpted and sutured.

Liposuction surgery time can vary depending on what type of liposuction you are having – chin liposuction, facial liposuction, thigh liposuction – but it will generally take between 1-2 hours.

POST SURGERY:

Most people who have liposuction will be able to return home on the same day as their surgery but in some cases a short stay in hospital may be required.

RECOVERY:
After liposuction surgery the patient will experience bruising and swelling and this could continue for 2-4 weeks (this depends on the amount of fat that was removed and the patient’s healing ability). Painkillers are usually prescribed for any pain that is felt and it is important to rest and take it easy during recovery. Supportive garments must be worn during the recovery period as this will help achieve the best results. Scarring is minimal and should fade over time. It is important to attend follow up doctor consultations so that they can monitor your recovery and advise you about exercise and other activities.

It is best to remember that whatever type of liposuction you are considering, whether it be facial liposuction or body liposuction, it is important that you are physically fit and healthy, psychologically stable and your expectations are realists.
